Summary |
|
Game |
Summary |
| #1 |
The Berlin Dolphin Cadets ages 7-10 were facing a
much improved team from Pocomoke and the Warriors
edged out the win late in 4th quarter 13-0. The
young Dolphins defense kept the game close causing
two turnovers but in the end a late 20 yard
touchdown with less than four minutes to play ended
any chances of a comeback. The young offense
struggled at times but began to move the ball late
in the 4th quarter when some untimely penalties
killed their best drive of the night. |

Buckingham
Elementary School was the scene of total domination
by the Berlin Cadet (7-10 years old)
Dolphins defeating the Princess Anne Jaguars
(Washington H.S.) 28-6. The Berlin Dolphin defense
was relentless with excellent gang tackling and
forcing the Jaguars to commit turnovers. The Cadet
Dolphins forced 2 fumbles and 1 interception. The
Berlin Dolphins Cadet offense drove down and scored
on their first drive and the team never trailed in
the game. A late score prevented a shut out on a day
that seen the Jaguars struggle to make only 5 first
downs. The Berlin Dolphins Offensive squads
methodically kept the ball moving with great line
blocking scoring a season high 28 points. The first
touchdown scored against the Princess Anne Jaguars
was a Quarterback draw ran by Billy Wheatley for 10
yards. After an extra point conversion on a sweep
run by Donnie Haggins it was 7-0 and the Dolphins
defense never relinquished that lead. “JJ” Purnell
ran for two more touchdowns including a 50 yard
bootleg down the side line early in the second half.
Both Quarterbacks were making their first start for
the “A” and “B” squads. The Princess Anne Jags
scored on the last play of the game to make the
final score 28-6. |

In
A Game Of Big Plays The Berlin Cadet Dolphins Win 2nd
Straight in a Defensive Thriller that came down to
the Last play of Game 7-0!
Berlin- Again this week the
Berlin Cadet Dolphins were home at Buckingham
Elementary School Field to face the Salisbury
Vikings of the Salvation Army Youth Football League.
Both teams have some of the league’s best defensive
units and both coaches knew a big play or two would
decide the outcome. Both offensive teams played
relatively mistake free football with drives that
often stalled due to defensive stands. In the first
half Berlin Cadet Dolphin Defensive unit held the
Viking offensive unit to negative yardage but
neither team was able to convert anything into
points inside the red zone.
Both teams
were scoreless at the half with a halftime score of
0 – 0. The first big turnover came at the opening 2nd
half Kick-off when the Berlin Cadet Dolphins failed
to recover the football giving the Salisbury Vikings
both possession of the ball and great field position
on the Dolphin’s own 30 yard line.
Just like
the first half the dominant Dolphin Defense
responded with 4 straight plays of negative yardage
for the Vikings and giving their offense the ball
near the 45 yard line. The defensive stand was
highlighted by sacks by linebacker Donnie Haggins,
linebacker Garrett Rites, and safety Devin Daniels.
As their head Coach Ron Birely is quick to point
out, “They really play as a unit and gang tackle on
every play.” Defensive Coordinator Bill Wheatley
said, “Many will look to this defensive stand this
year as the key moment that changed our season. I
even kidded the kids that we became a team today
because every player contributed to this win!”
Still, somebody would have to make a big play to
break this scoreless tie. The Berlin Dolphin “A”
team offense ran a time consuming 10 play, ball
controlling, 55yard drive to the 1 yard line to end
the 3rd quarter. During this drive QB
Billy Wheatley, FB Donnie Haggins, and RB Devin
Daniels grinded
out tough yards for first downs against a stingy
Viking defense. This
drive set up the “B” team with a First and Goal from
the one yard line where QB J.J. Purnell punched it
in for the games only Score. With the converted
extra point the young Cadet Dolphins held the game
first lead with a little over 7 minutes to play 7-0.
Twice more the Cadet Dolphin Defense came up big and
pushed back their opponents and ending their drive
at the 45 yard line.
With less than a minute to go the Dolphin
offense was attempting to run out the clock when on
a fourth and four the Viking defense caused a
turnover and gave their team one last chance on
their own 11 yard line. The Vikings then through a
“Hail Mary” pass that somehow was caught and the
receiver raced down the sideline 78 yards only to
have LB Tromaine saved the game with a great last
second tackle at the 1 yard line as time expired. In
a game of big plays and bigger still defensive
stands it was clear that both teams left it all out
on the field. Coaches of both teams agreed and said
it was a shame one team had to lose because both
teams’ players gave it their all!

Berlin Cadet Dolphins Lose
battle of Wills in Loss in the Rain To Snow Hill
14-6
Meanwhile a wet and windy day
awaited both teams in Salisbury as the Berlin
Dolphins faced cross town rivals Snow Hill Eagles
Cadet teams (ages 7-10) of the Salvation Army “Red
Shield “ Youth Football League. A sloppy turnover
filled game with both teams struggling against the
others defense. The game started out with the Snow
Hill Eagles coughing up the ball on their first play
from scrimmage. After the fumble the Dolphin ”B”offense
drove down to the 25 yard line of the Eagles where
the “A” team coughed up the football right back to
the Eagles. Both offenses remained ineffective
throughout much of the 1st half with great defensive
play on both sides. This of course was until the
outside containment of the Dolphins broke down and a
44 yard touchdown run by the Snow Hill Eagles just
before the half led to the Snow Hill 7 Dolphins 0
halftime score. The rain grew increasingly heavy and
both teams coaches knew this would be a game of
wills not only against opponents but the elements!
In the 3rd quarter, both teams began moving the ball
effectively outside the twenties but were still
ineffective in the Red Zone against great defensive
play. Late in the 3rd quarter Quarterback Billy
Wheatley ran a bootleg 45 yards for the Dolphins
first score. But again the Eagle defense stood tall
and stopped the extra point attempt to keep the lead
Snow Hill 7- Berlin Dolphins 6. The Dolphin defense
late in the fourth quarter had only their second big
breakdown in coverage and gave up what would be the
deciding score, a 24 yard run that put the Eagles on
the 1 yard line. The Cadet Dolphins defense kept the
Eagles out on their first attempt from the 1 yard
line but the Eagles punched it in on second down on
a QB sneak with the extra point taking a late
commanding 14-6 lead. With less than a minute to
play Quarterback Bill Wheatley tried to rally a
comeback scoring on a 65 yard sweep for an apparent
TD set up by a beautiful lead block by Devin
Daniels. Only to have the played called back for an
illegal block far away from the play that sealed the
young Berlin Dolphins fate to 2-2. Both coaches were
appreciative of their teams play in a tough
environment. Up next for the Berlin Cadet Dolphins
is the undefeated Salisbury Black Knights at Berlin
October 24th at Berlin Buckingham Elementary School
10 am start time.

Cadet Dolphins (Ages 7-10) continue to struggle on
Defense in allowing the big play. One of The
Salvation Army’s’ Youth Football League’s top cadet
teams is the Salisbury Black Knights who won this
game 26-0. Mistackles and blown assignments early
seem to seal this team’s fate in their last two
straight losses. The Black Knights scored early on a
55 yard Kickoff return for touchdown to start the
game.
The next possession the Cadet Dolphins failed to get
a first down on offense and on the first offensive
play from scrimmage for the Black Knights they
scored again on a 50 yard touchdown. After that the
Cadet Dolphins seem to calm down and had some
sustained drives that stalled in the red zone. Late
in the 2nd quarter the Black Knights
scored on a long drive making the score at half time
20-0. The second half was like a different team as
both the Dolphin defense and offense dominated time
of possession and controlling the line of scrimmage
only allowing one more touchdown for the rest of the
game.
Head Coach Ron Birely said of his teams play, “ We
struggled in the red zone and gave up three big
plays early. I would have liked to played the whole
game the way we played in the
second half and perhaps we could have had a chance.
We just weren’t there in the beginning of this game.

Berlin Cadet Dolphins Lose
Again On Big Play Mistakes 19-6
Berlin, Md.- The Berlin Cadet
Dolphins lost their 3rd straight game to Wicomico
Bull Dogs 19-6 after giving up 3 big plays in the
first half. At first the young Dolphin defense on B
team stopped the opening drive of the Bull Dogs on a
fumble caused by Obi Metzger giving the Cadet
Dolphin Offense great field position on the Bull Dog
40yd line. The Cadet Dolphin offense then again
stalled in the red zone and turned the ball over on
downs. On the First play from the “A” teams a 60
yard run down the right sideline gave the Bull Dogs
a lead with the extra point 7-0. The Dolphins
offense then went 4 and out and the Bull Dogs again
got a big play right up the middle to take a 13-0
lead after failing on the extra point conversion.
Early in the second quarter the Dolphins B team
answered back with a touchdown by Dolphins leading
scorer J.J. Purnell on a QB bootleg. Making the
score 13-6. Then the Cadet Dolphin Defense held its
ground and gave the ball back to their offense who
had its best drive of the day to the Bull Dog 40
yard line where untimely penalties killed the drive.
With less than 30 seconds left in the half everyone
at the game knew the Bull Dogs were going to pass.
Yet again the Dolphins defense fell victim to a
fluke play for the third time this year when a
deflected pass was caught and ran in for a 60 TD
right at the half. This despite being in an obvious
prevent defense. Defensive Coordinator Bill Wheatley
said, “Our pass rushers did not execute the defense
called, thus allowing that extra second to both the
qb and receiver to get behind our safeties and we
failed to knock the pass down.” “The ball went right
thru the hands of our safety and deflected to their
man for the TD. That’s why they call it a game of
inches.” Making the score at the half 19-6. The
second half look at first as if the Dolphins would
mount a comeback as the B offense drove the ball
down field into Bull Dog territory only to have the
drive stall. The Dolphin defense managed to keep the
Bull Dogs scoreless during the second half. The
Dolphin offense never really threatened and the game
was won on those first half big plays. Head Coach
Ron Birely said, “Our Dolphin team during this
current losing streak has started slow and dug
itself into a deep hole. We just haven’t been able
to start well and it has hurt us.” |

The Salvation Army Stadium Field was the site of the
last game for the Cadet Dolphins 2009 season. The
Cadet Dolphins end the season 3-5 just falling short
of the playoffs losing 14-0 to the league’s best
Green Terrors 14-0.The Cadet Dolphins would face the
league’s best undefeated team South Salisbury Green
Terrors who were trying to remain perfect on the
year. The Green Terrors are averaging a league
leading 26 points a game, while allowing fewer than
3 points per game. The Dolphins knew they were
facing the league’s toughest defense that allowed
only 20 points all year. Early on it was clear that
this was going to be a defensive struggle as both
teams offenses struggled against the other. The
Cadet Dolphins defense for much of the first half
held the vaunted Green Terror offense in check. A
controversial holding call on the Dolphin defense
gave the Green Terrors an automatic first down on a
4th and 18 late in the second quarter and deep in
their own end. Yet, again it was the big play that
has hurt the Dolphins Defense all year. As the
Salisbury Green Terrors took advantage of 6
mistackles on a 56 yard run off tackle for a
Touchdown with just over a minute to go in the first
half. The half time score was South Salisbury Green
Terrors 7 Dolphins 0. The third quarter opened with
another good defensive stand by the “B” defense.
After a 4 and out by the offense again the big play
hurt the Dolphins Defense after two converted 4th
downs. Then another run off tackle resulted in a 33
yard touchdown run by the Green Terrors and a 14-0
lead. The Dolphins again drove the ball twice more
into the Green Terrors Red Zone but were stopped
just short of scoring. The Final Score was Green
Terrors 14 Dolphins 0. Head Coach Ron Birely said,
”I am so proud of our players effort today. We all
knew coming in we would have to be perfect to come
close to beating them, and except for two big plays
our players showed how close we are to being an
elite team in this league as well. That was by far
our best game of the year. If we had played that way
all year the Green Terrors would have been the only
ones who could have beaten us.” |
