Junior Berlin Dolphins Fall
Short In Championship Game 25-6 To Undefeated Vikings!
Salisbury, Md.- In close
football games it is often the special teams play that
decides the outcome of the game. The 2009 Salvation Army
“Red Shield” Junior Youth Football Championship would be
decided the same way. In a close hard fought game that
in no way was reflected in the final score the
Undefeated Wicomico Vikings captured this year 2009
Championship and their special teams play was the
difference. The Final score was 25-6, but the game
remained tied for all of the first 3 quarters and close
until the very end, in this defensive struggle. From the
opening kickoff the Junior Berlin Dolphins showed they
were ready to play capping a 7 play 55 yard drive with a
1 yard touchdown run by Tayevon Mills. After a failed
extra point attempt, the Berlin Dolphins took the early
lead 6-0. The Wicomico Vikings showed why they were
undefeated as they took just 4 plays to respond and
scored on a 38 yard run for touchdown tying the game
back at 6-6. The game remained tied because of a great
one on one tackle by the Dolphins Andrew Borradile which
prevented the attempted extra point run by the Viking
QB. The score remained this way for much of the first
half until a great punt by the Wicomico Vikings pinned
the Junior Dolphins deep on their own 10 yard line with
less than 4 minutes left in the half. The Dolphins
received two penalties that kept them pinned deep in the
own territory with 38 seconds to go in the half. The
Dolphins called time out to set up a punt which was a
low kick that was fielded at the 40 yard line by the
Vikings who returned the ball to the 1 yard line. But
the Junior Berlin Dolphin Defense did not panic and made
a great goal line stand. Led by Middle line backer Chase
Sams who made two straight tackles at the 1 yard line on
the qb sneak attempts as time expired leaving the game
knotted 6-6 at halftime. The second half started out
much like the first with both teams offenses struggling
to figure out the others defensive schemes. After a two
consecutive three and outs for both teams offenses, the
Vikings special teams would make the first of two big
plays that would eventually decide the Championship. On
4th and 6 the Vikings coach decided to punt the ball and
try to pin the Dolphins deep in their own territory. The
Dolphins stayed in a set defense opting to guard against
a fake and the Viking punter did pin them back on their
own 5 yard line with a 42 yard unreturned punt. The
Dolphin Offense failed to move the ball against the
stingy Viking defense after three failed runs and an
illegal motion penalty. Again the Vikings special teams
made another key play blocking the Dolphins punt attempt
and setting their offense up first and goal from the 2
yard line. The Dolphins then suddenly found themselves
quickly down 12-6 early in the fourth quarter. After the
ensuing kickoff the Dolphins again began to grind out
tough yardage by the running of Tayevon Mills and Andrew
Borradile. This time a bad penalty cost the Dolphins a
first down run that resulted in a 2nd and 25 on their
own 35 yard line instead of a first and ten on the
Viking 49 yard line. After turning over the ball on
downs the defense gave up a 35 yard back breaking score
off tackle giving the Vikings a 19-6 lead with a little
over 4 minutes to play in the game. The Dolphins refused
to give up and on 4th and 23 the Dolphins converted the
first down with a deep pass down to the Viking 9 yard
line. But again the Viking defense thwarted the Dolphins
on 4 straight running plays. It was then the Dolphins
gave up their only bad play on defense all day as the
Vikings converted a long 3rd down with a 82 yard td run
to end the scoring at 25-6. Coach Earnest Shockley told
his team after the game “I am proud of you, our season,
and my coaching staff. I want to Thank you all and our
supporters for making this a great year!”

Junior
Berlin Dolphins Will Play In Championship with Playoff Win
Over Black Knights 13-7 !
Salisbury,
Md.- Salvation Army "Riddick" Stadium was the scene for Round
one of the Salvation Army "Red Shield" Divisional playoffs for
the Junior Berlin Dolphins versus the Salisbury Black Knights.
The winner of this game would face the undefeated Wicomico
Vikings who won their divisional game the night before over
Pocomoke Warriors. The Dolphins gave up an early score in the
first quarter to trail 7-0 to the Black Knights. The defenses
of both teams dominated the offenses and the score remained
Vikings 7- Dolphins 0 at the half. The entire game was a
defensive struggle about field position. The Vikings
then executed a perfect onside kick to start the second half
against the "B" team. The "B" defensive team proved to be as
tough as the "A" team defense driving the Black Knights
backwards and giving the "A" team offense back the football at
around the 50 yard line. Much of the entire third quarter was
played in the middle of the field with both offenses trying to
figure out the opposing defense. The Dolphins began to pound
the football trying to find a weakness in the Black Knight
defense. Then
suddenly Andrew Borradille squirted through off tackle and tied the
game with a 42 yard TD run. The extra point conversion was
scored by the Dolphins to tie the game late in the 3rd
quarter.
Both Dolphins defensive units held their ground early in the 4th
quarter with key tackles by Noah Metzger on “B” team. This led
to a methodical ball control drive late in the fourth quarter.
Head Coach Earnest Shockley continued in the fourth quarter
pounding the ball off tackle. While initially early on this
strategy seem to be failing, to his credit he stuck with the
game plan and it paid off. It was clear that the strong
running game of the Dolphins began wearing down the Black
knight Defense. The Junior Dolphins again began driving into
the Black Knights side of the field. The Dolphins converted
two 4th and longs and at the "4 minute Warning”, the Dolphins found themselves at the
Black Knights own 28 yard line. This was by far the best field
position either team had in the game. The Dolphins made it to
the 4 yard line where it was First and Goal to go. To the
Black Knights Credit their defense made a great goal line
stand forcing the Dolphins to use all 4 downs. On 4th
Down the Dolphins would not be denied as
Tayevon Mills scored their second TD of the half and took a
13-7 lead with a little more than 1 minute to play. The extra
point failed and the Dolphins clung to a six point lead. On
the ensuing kick off the Black Knights mishandled the ball and
it was recovered by Tyree Adams the Dolphins who
assumed the victory formation and kneeled down to run out the
clock and secure their first ever appearance in their 7 year
history into the Championship game.
